As far as finding out his cause of death, that can be difficult (if not impossible) for 1844, there were no death certificates at that time. The township or county might have had a register but many places didn’t. There could be church burial records that sometimes mentioned cause of death. Another option could be local newspapers. These are all a long shot but worth looking into.
